NightinGala Conference, June 2008

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the word zoömusicology, Dario Martinelli convened the world’s first conference devoted to the subject, which he defines as the "aesthetic use of sound communication among animals." The event was co-hosted by the Sibelius Academy at the Kallio-Kuninkala estate, near Helsinki. Martinelli invited both musicologists and biologists to participate, with the focus all on one species, the nightingale. NightinGala was an eclectic event comprising a concert and a series of seminars. The time of the festival coincided with the period when nightingales migrate to Finland and can often be heard in the night singing their songs. (This time of year, “night” consists of just a few hours of twilight.)

Sur la vingt-cinquième anniversaire du mot zoömusicologie, Dario Martinelli convoqué le premier congrès mondiale consacrée à ce sujet, qu'il définit comme "l'utilisation esthétique de la communication sonore chez les animaux." L'événement a été co-organisé par l'Académie Sibelius à la succession Kallio-Kuninkala, près d'Helsinki. Martinelli a invité les deux musicologues et des biologistes de participer, en mettant l'accent sur une seule espèce, le rossignol. NightinGala a été un événement éclectique comprenant un concert et une série de séminaires. Le temps de la fête a coïncidé avec la période où les rossignols migrent vers la Finlande et peuvent souvent être entendus dans la nuit chantant leurs chansons. (Cette période de l'année, «nuit » se compose de quelques heures du crépuscule.)

Harri Viitanen is known as Finland’s Olivier Messiaen, both because he is a composer who uses birdsong in his music and because of his expertise as an organist (Helsinki Cathedral). In studying astronomy, ornithology, and the latest data technology, Viitanen has developed an impressive personal compositional language.
